Academies budget briefing Charities in general were anticipating a difficult time from the Budget, academies were also wondering what the main effects of an austerity Budget might be. Spending cuts were widely, and correctly, predicted. One area that will cause distress to charities and academies alike is the increase in VAT from 17.5% to 20%. The sector already suffers greatly from the general inability to reclaim VAT and it is a long running issue for all affected. This increase will only worsen the position and heighten the sector’s view that VAT is a grossly unfair tax on those providing charitable services. One crumb of comfort could be the rise in Capital Gains Tax which might persuade wealthy individuals to seek to avoid paying the higher rate by gifting more assets to charities.
