Building on standards of investment governance
Following the success of our 2008 Investment Governance Survey: Raising Standard of Investment Governance, Horwath Clark Whitehill has published the results of its second survey of occupational pension schemes: Building on Standards of Investment Governance.

|
This year’s survey reflects on some of the issues covered last year and gives consideration to additional investment governance matters.
The results of the survey are being fed through to the Investment Governance Group, which is a joint industry and government forum, which aims to issue a small number of high level investment governance principles, including guidance and tools for trustees. |
Shona Harvie, Pensions Group Partner, comments:
“Investment governance provides the framework through which trustees ensure that they fulfil their duties. It cover many areas including setting the investment objectives and strategy, monitoring key risks and controls, and ensuring there are clear lines of accountability. As strategies become more complicated, so the need for greater governance arrangements increases. The Investment Governance Group has an opportunity to provide pension schemes with greatly needed guidance on the arrangements that should be in place. Any new requirements introduced however, will need to bear in mind the cost benefits to the schemes.”
Horwath Clark Whitehill collated responses from trustees and pensions managers involved in investment governance arrangements of occupational pension schemes. Of the respondents, 86% were from schemes with net assets over £100 million with 31% from schemes with net assets over
£1 billion.
