The first Budget of a new government often sets the tone of developments in tax legislation for the next four to five year period. This time we have the interplay of coalition partners to interpret as well. In tackling the nation’s deficit the Chancellor has announced substantial spending cuts, but the detail will follow in the autumn. On tax measures the main impact across the population will be the VAT increase. The Capital Gains Tax (CGT) rate change will affect some partners adversely, whilst the prospect of higher rate tax relief on some level of pension contributions from 6 April 2011 will be welcome by many.
