A large chain of public houses was not registered for VAT and the VAT at stake was in the region of £2m. The defendant was charged with deliberately evading VAT by not registering the companies for VAT. The case involved tracking the movement of monies and establishing the VAT liabilities of such movements. We were able to reduce the purported tax at risk to £1.2m and the matter was settled out of court.

 

We prepared a detailed expert witness report and gave evidence at Westminster Crown Court for the defence in a case involving a firm of chartered accountants accused of cheating the public purse. The case involved complicated VAT and accounting matters.

We prepared an expert witness report for a case where the defendants were accused of cheating the public purse by way of ‘carousel fraud’. This international missing trader fraud involved a significant number of companies.

We are currently preparing an expert witness report for a case where the defendants are contesting the validity of a food/drink VAT assessment prepared by HMRC.
